Franz Mehrfert is a professional bassist, band leader, music entertainment manager, and music educator with a dynamic career spanning North America and beyond. Originally from Canada, now based in Los Angeles, he is highly regarded for his versatility as a session musician, comfortable performing and recording across a broad spectrum of musical genres, with a career including significant roles as a music director and touring musician.
Franz has performed internationally on cruise lines, and throughout Canada and the US, including as bassist on the 1st National tour of the musical Nice Work If You Can Get It. Franz has performed and recorded with a wide variety of artists, including Dee Dee Daniels, Lorna Luft, Adrian Zmed, Tommy Banks, The Platters, Air Supply, and with champion Piano Entertainer Ryan Ahern for his 2018 and 2020 PBS in-concert specials, filmed in Las Vegas.
Franz also managed music entertainment operations for Princess Cruises, as Sr. Manager of Music Direction & Licensing, from 2015-2024, overseeing all aspects of live & recorded music onboard, and now works as an entertainment consultant. With a strong foundation in both classical and jazz music, Franz holds a Bachelor of Music degree in Double Bass and Musicology from UBC, where he also developed his jazz arranging skills, studying with Fred Stride. He has provided custom music arrangements for headliners and ensembles in Los Angeles and Las Vegas, and around the world. As a seasoned session player, Franz is comfortable with any/all musical genres, can be found performing and recording on bass around LA and SoCal with various groups and ensembles, including “Sunset Bloom”, an acoustic easy-listening trio.
Beyond his performance work, Franz is a dedicated music educator and worked as a public-school teacher in British Columbia, Canada, teaching concert band, jazz band, and choir, for many years. Franz is excited to now join Knauer Music School to offer private music lessons.
