Music is in Grant's DNA: Father was a jazz pianist, vocalist and composer with a Nat King Cole style. Mother was a violinist and a vocalist who would perform with Father. Becoming a musician profoundly changed his life and he seeks to share his knowledge and talents.
Grant started piano and vibe lessons at age eleven yet when he was twelve had a severe accident falling off a roof; he ended up pulverizing both wrists along with a concussion. It took over a year for him to heal: finger and hand exercises were required and the piano became a restorative tool.
At the age of fourteen, he discovered he could hear a melody and play it on the piano (mostly Elton John songs). After six months of self learning and teaching himself how to read, he sought more advanced instruction and was lucky to find a teacher named Charles "Chuck" Pratt, who was amazing pianist specializing in jazz and ragtime. Grant studied with Chuck for over two years which was a life changing relationship motivating him like no other educator. Some of Grant's musical heroes are Vladimir Horowitz, Oscar Peterson and Keith Emerson.
Grant practiced 4+ hours a day progressing rapidly...he started jamming in bands at one year. In high school harmony class, he programmed one of the first synths the Putney VCS Three. He did one year of pipe organ studies at Santa Monica City College and three years of classical studies with Professor Richard Grayson of Occidental College. (Richard was also a composer of avant garde Classical pieces, mostly for two pianos.) He is a graduate of Dick Grove School of Jazz, a two year program covering theory, sight reading, improvisation and composition.
He studied and recorded with Derek Sherinian of Dream Theatre, Alice Cooper, Kiss and Billy Idol. He played in country, jazz, R&B and rock bands since age 15 and also did plenty of solo gigs mostly weddings, parties and live corporate events. He was also in two original bands "Genuine Illusion" and "Never Wasn't" as well as three tribute bands for Emerson, Lake& Palmer, Journey and Kansas.
